The healthcare industry is in a period of rapid expansion. Advances in medical technology combined with the aging of the American population have meant a increase in the demand for medical procedures that will only grow for the next several decades. The result of this is that there is a shortage of qualified personnel in America's hospitals and that perhaps no other sector presents as good of a job market as does the field of medicine. A Surgical Technician (Surgical Tech) works at the side of the surgeon during procedures. They are responsible for ensuring that the operating room is set up as it should be and all of the relevant equipment is in place for a surgical procedure. They are responsible for ensuring that instruments are properly sterilized, versed in how to prevent and control infections, and how to handle certain drugs and supplies. In order to become a surgical tech, you must be high school graduate and attend a specialized school accredited by the American Medical Association's Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) where you will earn a surgical technician degree.
